The area is named for a beacon, which was built in 1634 and once stood here, at the highest point in central Boston. This neighborhood is also home to the Massachusetts State House, which was designed by Charles Bulfinch. Construction of the State House was completed in 1798, and the building has been enlarged a number of times since. It is considered to be one of Bulfinch’s finest works and was designed as a National Historic Landmark for its architectural significance.
